DAILY SCHEDULE:

2:35 Dismissal

Students line up in the Dale Street School Gym and are met by a MAP teacher who checks them in.

2:35-3:00 Snack and Announcements

3:00-4:00 Homework or Outside Time

After a long school day, many students need to unwind.  For those students, outside play is offered right away.  Other students would rather get their homework done at the beginning of the MAP day so they don’t have to worry about it later.  For those students, the homework room is open right away.  After the MAPsters check in, they will be able to choose whether they want to go outside or go to the homework room.

As soon as snack is over, clubs will start (when in session).  There will be four sessions of club throughout the year.  Club descriptions and signups will be announced and posted in the Main Room a week before they begin.  Past clubs have included basketball club, scrapbooking club, knitting club, and game show club.  See our latest newsletter below for the current session of clubs!

4:00-5:45 Choice Time

At 4:00, we offer a second snack that is either a fruit or vegetable.  Also at this time, the remaining rooms open up.  Students may move freely from room to room for the remainder of the day:

a)   Homework Room

b)   Main Room – computers, board games, free art, books

c)   Project – changes each day (ranging from arts & crafts, to game shows, to take-apart, to cooking, to karaoke… you never know what the teachers will come up with)

d)   Main Hall (when available) –  music, dancing, ping pong, group games

e)  Outside/Gym – a combination of free play and organized games

f)   Clubs – In addition to projects, the teachers will be offering clubs throughout the year.  Club descriptions and signups will be announced and posted in the Main Room a week before they begin.

5:45-6:00 Simmer Down

All MAPsters are called to the Main Room and can play group games, read, draw or other activities as the teachers clean up from the day.

CONTRACTS:

(Click  HERE  to download any of the following contracts)

COMPUTER CONTRACTS

MAP’s computers are hooked up to the Internet. However, in order to go online, we require students to have a Computer Contract.  This contract outlines our rules and expectations of appropriate conduct while online.  Parents must review these rules and expectations with their child, and we must have a signed contract on file before the student is allowed to use the Internet. You can find our computer contract in the forms page, or in the Main Room.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

There are many opportunities available to 4th and 5th graders offered by both the school and the Park and Rec.  The location of the MAP site is convenient for students to walk to/from their activities after school.

If your child is involved in intramurals or some other extracurricular activity on a day he/she attends MAP, you must fill out a form granting him/her permission to walk to/from MAP.  To download this form, visit our forms page. If you have trouble downloading the form, we have hard copies available in the Main Room at the Pfaff.

HOMEWORK CONTRACTS

MAP provides a quiet space and supplies so that students can work on their homework while at the program.  There is also staff on hand to make sure students are staying on task and to answer their questions.  If you would like your child to do his/her homework at MAP and you find that he/she is choosing not to do it, you may want to consider filling out a homework contract with him/her.  A Homework Contract is an agreement between the student and the parent. The amount of time required working on homework, as well as any rewards/consequences are decided upon by the student and parent.  MAP will encourage students on Homework Contracts to fulfill their obligations specified in the contract, but it is the responsibility of the parent to check the child’s homework and follow through on the rewards and consequences. Find our homework contract on our forms page!

MAP MONTHLY

4th & 5th Grade Site | February 2012

A Letter From the Director

Dear MAP Families,

While I am not a huge moviegoer through the course of a year, my partner and I cram in as many movies as we can see come Awards Season. As soon as the nominations for the Golden Globes are announced, we check our local theater listings and On Demand choices and plan out our movie watching schedule through Academy Award Night, all the while taking note of those movies bringing home hardware from the Golden Globe and SAG Award Shows.

This past weekend we saw The Artist. The movie is set in 1927 Hollywood and centers around the life of George Valentin, a successful movie star of silent films. Without spoiling the movie for anyone who has not yet seen it, Valentin is faced with feelings of becoming washed-up and irrelevant as the advent of the talkies replaces silent films.

While the movie is set nearly ninety years ago, the notion of new innovations changing life as we know it is even more prevalent in modern day society. You buy the newest smart phone, computer or TV today knowing that in a few months something even more powerful, faster, and smarter is going to be released. New innovations have changed our labor needs, changed the way we get the news, and changed the world that our children are being brought up in.

Like George Valentin in The Artist, the staff and I sometimes feel behind the eight ball in terms of keeping up to date with all of the new technology that the younger generation is bringing to our attention. Much of these technological advances are great. For example, teachers are posting assignments and supplemental learning tools on their classroom websites. Students are able to plug their iPods into the radio at MAP and play their favorite songs in the gym. Both of these things are great for the students. However as technology advances faster and faster these days, our rules and policies are changing more often in order to adapt. For example, our former simple rule that "mp3 players are allowed, but cell phones are not" is trickier because nowadays they are often times one in the same. The "no texting or chat rooms" rule is harder to enforce as more and more devices and online games have these capabilities. As we try to navigate our way through modern day society and keep up with the technology, I welcome any insights from you, the parents. Let us know any concerns you have with the new technologies that you have brought into your house, as well as how you have dealt with them. As George Valentin finds out, we cannot simply ignore innodo from The Artistvation and hope that society stays back with us. It is our role as teachers and parents to help our youth learn to use it responsibly.

Wishing you and your families a wondeful Super Bowl Weekend,

Michael

Pfunn @ the PfaffJan - Hockey Tournament

We kicked off our travel theme during the month of January, starting in Canada and the United States.  Our centers and projects were all themed around our wonderful country and our neighbors to the north.  Some of the MAPster's favorite activities included making winter snow globes, drawing Canadian animals, and participating in a floor hockey tournament.

From the cold temps of winter in Canada and the US, we moved to the warmer climate of The Caribbean.  Students enjoyed making colorful tap-tap trucks out of both clay and giant boxes, crafting various projects with shells, and cooking plantains.

Feb - DidgeridooNext we traveled to

Australia

where the MAPsters painted aboriginal pictures, designed their own boomerangs & didgeridoos and even sampled vegimite!  They were also very creative when trying to figure out what this type of hat is used for in Australia:

What is it?

Not sure what it is?  Ask your MAPster!

Thank you to Mrs. Drumm for providing a lot of resources for our Australia week!

Feb - Asian Fashion ShowDuring the fourth week of the month we traveled to

Asia.  The MAPsters tried their hand at using both Arabic and Chinese characters to write their names.  They also channeled their inner fashion designer as they created their own Asian inspired clothing.  There were two cooking opportunities this week. Some of the students took a field trip to Zebras where their sushi chef helped them roll their own maki rolls.  We ended the week with Joe leading the kids in a cooking demonstration in which everyone made their own spring roll.

We will continue our travel theme during February, when our themes will include South America, Africa, Europe, and Back Home in Medfield.

Pajama Party - RIO STYLE!Feb - PNO

On Friday, January 27, MAP held its annual Parents' Night Out Fundraiser.  At the 4th & 5th Grade Site we brought the fun vibe of Rio De Janeiro's Carnival to the Pfaff Center.  The Main Hall was decked out with bright lights and colorful birds soaring overhead and Samba music blasting. The kids enjoyed playing volleyball, hulahooping, and dancing.  After pizza and salad for dinner, we played our own version of Angry Birds, then tie-dyed t-shirts using the colorful colors that can be seen at Carnival.  After some brownies, sorbet, and fruit for dessert, we played team hide-and-go seek throughout the Pfaff Center with the lights off!  We ended the night by relaxing and watching the movie RIO.  Thank you to all of the families who took part in our fundraiser.  We appreciate your continued support!

Show Your Love for MAP!

Show Your Love for MAP  There is a multitude of hearts cascading from the box with various items printed on them.  If you wish, you can take a heart (or hearts) from the display and donate that item to MAP.  All of the items can be found on your shopping trips to the grocery or craft stores.  Thanks so much for your continued support!

This is a way you can help MAP with items we use regularly.  Go to the oversized box of conversation hearts above the attendance book.

Winter Weather

snow bootsEven though we have yet to have a major snow fall, in the case that we do, please be sure to send your child with appropriate outside attire.  It would be extremely helpful to make sure all scarves, hats, jackets, etc are labeled.  Every year we end up with a huge mountain of Lost & Found items with no names on them.

On days when there is snow on the ground, MAPsters are allowed to play in the snow only if they have boots and snowpants.  If they do not, they are still allowed to go outside, but are limited to the blacktop.

If the schools elect to close early, MAP will be closed for all children grades K-8. Children will be sent home or to your emergency destination on the bus. They will not be sent to MAP as MAP will not be open!

snowflakeIn the event there is a weather related or other emergency and the schools are closed but MAP is scheduled to be open or if MAP elects to close early, MAP will broadcast on Channel 7 News and on their web site www.whdh.com any closings, delays, or emergencies (early closing). We will call and request that you come and pick up your child as soon as possible. MAP will use its own discretion on its openings and closing based on the severity of the emergency.

MAP's QUEST | Capital Campaign

The year end drive for our capital campaign, MAP's Quest, is underway and there are several ways you can contribute.  You will find a letter and return envelope in your MAP mailbox, but you can also donate on line today by clicking on the MAP's Quest Link on our website: www.medfieldafterschoolprogram.com.

If you prefer, you can divide your gift into smaller payments and send it in your monthly tuition (the donated portion remains tax-deductible).  We can easily include a reminder with your invoice.

Just remember, while the campaign will continue through June, your support is urgently needed today to meet the costs of repairing the roof, fix electrical and plumbing systems, and stop water infiltration problems.

Your donation made before December 31 qualifies for a 2011 tax deduction and helps us complete repairs and improvements as soon as possible.

Thank you for your generous support..
