The MAP AM K-Extension Program complements the afternoon kindergarten session. MAP opens at 8:30 a.m. Children are dropped off at MAP in the morning by their families, and signed in. Children have the opportunity for free play in the room choosing from the computers, dramatic play, blocks, dolls, games, recycle art and the book area.

Free play is followed by meeting time. During this time we come together and share stories or things that might be going on in the children’s lives.  This is also a time when the teachers can make announcements as well as assign the daily jobs to the children.

After meeting we go outside. The children can choose from an organized game or make one up. In the A.M MAP we use the Wheelock playground since the 2nd and 3rd graders are in their classes. Please make sure that your child has shoes that he or she can run around in, because we do a lot of that here! After outside free play the children come inside for group time.

Group Time is a theme based time together for fun and learning. Teachers plan themes that are interesting, and that appeal to the children. After group there is a project, activity, game, or song that goes along with the theme and that day’s learning. It could be cooking, arts & crafts, a game, science experiments, drama, sports, magic, creative movement, etc...

Lunch follows group. All children bring their lunch to MAP. MAP provides milk and water, and has a microwave oven for heat-ups, so last night’s leftovers could be a perfect lunch option. After lunch, the children listen to a story while they wait for the bus to bring them to the Memorial school.

The MAP PM K-Extension Program complements the morning kindergarten session. The children arrive to MAP on a bus provided by the Medfield School system and attendance is taken upon arrival. The children start their day eating lunch together. MAP provides milk and water and has a microwave oven for heat ups, so last night’s leftovers could be a perfect lunch option. After lunch the children have free play in our room.

K-Ext. Jan. 2012  MAP News
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! As we return from the holidays full of good food and good cheer we move back into our "normal" routine. As Jan. 3rd hit, the morning rush began; trying to get everyone ready for school and work and out the door without forgetting: lunches, hats, and gloves. I have been waking up a half hour earlier to manage this rushed feeling. As I look elsewhere I get the feeling that locally and globally people are just feeling rushed! The schools have added on 5 minutes to both sides of the day, and what about Samoa! They completely eliminated December 30th so they could catch up to Australia and New Zealand's time, moving that nation a day ahead of us. I thought the craziness would slow down after the holidays, but now it just seems to be speeding up, or at least people are just trying to catch up! Does this rushed feeling ever slow down?

Personally, I think I am adjusting to my new waking hour, and we have already started getting used to our slightly new MAP schedule as we adapt to the MAPsters arriving 5 minutes later, and to tell you the truth I have never gone to Samoa so it really doesn't bother me what they chose to do with their days or time. Good for them for trying to get caught up and if losing a day helps then so be it! Change happens and people adjust. So as you move along in 2012 I hope you find your right speed for the New Year.

Sincerely,

Stephanie

Looking back:

The beginning of December brought us to the end of our letter "F" exploration. Ana lead us in a discussion about friendship and what it means to be a friend by using a folktale from the Cherokees. This book explored the belief that strawberries are a symbol of friendship. From there we moved onto letter "G"
with a focus on Geography. Val used a globe and our world rug to teach about maps, the continents and oceans. The children worked in teams studying their own maps and then labeled the continents on our rug! So now when everyone takes a seat they choose a continent! Bernadette took us into the world of Grimm fairy tales. The children learned about the lives of the Grimm brothers and the stories they wrote. She read some stories; a favorite was Rapunzel, which the children recognized as the movie Tangled! Ana then dazzled us with glittering gems. Everyone learned the birthstones for each of the twelve months and the history and meaning of all these gorgeous gemstones. Ask your child if they remember their birth stone. Giraffes were up next. Bernadette introduced us to Ginger the giraffe and everyone had the chance to hold onto Ginger and help her pick a leaf of facts from the tree! Did you know that giraffes never sit down? They even sleep standing up!
Next up was the letter "H", what better time to learn about Hanukkah? Valerie told the story of the Festival of Lights and the symbolism of the Menorah. We also talked about some traditions like the dreidel game and potato latkes. Ana followed this up with a group about holiday traditions, specifically the history of the poinsettia.
Bernadette started us with "I" for illumination and all the lights of the holidays and the many different ways we illuminate our lives. Our final MAP day of 2011 was a fun packed celebration of the holidays.  On that day the children took off their shoes to get comfortable, and heard a reading of the Polar Express while drinking hot chocolate. Yum. Once the story ended the children discovered that they had a magical visit from Mr. C who left candy canes in everyone shoes!  The fun didn't end there; the children were able to paint with candy to make special chocolate treats, and they also designed center pieces for the holiday table and made noise makers to ring in the new year.. It was a busy, fabulous day!.

Projects
There was lots of fun at project time. The children made their own round crayons in honor of the many colors of the globe, puppets of characters from Grimm fairy tales and crowns with gems. They learned to make snowflakes. Made lovely poinsettia ornaments and beautiful rustic frames for their illuminated photographs!

Pin Sale
In addition to all their other projects and activities in December the children also created the beautiful winter themed pins for our Cradles to Crayons Pin Sale. The children worked very hard on this project, giving up free play time to make their creations. We are all very proud of them and they were rightly proud of themselves. We are ecstatic to report that the children earned $131!!! Next step...the children will vote by secret ballot for the items they would like to donate to C2C and the teachers will do the shopping. Thank you for all of your support. Don't forget we are still taking donations of new or gently used clothes/toys through January 13, 2012. So if you're cleaning out your closets in the New Year think of the C2C drive. Suggestions for requested items can be found at the sign-in/out desk. Thanks again.
