A Day at k-1 MAP

Jump Start & Kindergarten MorningsJump Start & Kindergarten AfternoonsFirst Grade & Kindergarten Afternoons

8:30-9:30
Arrival: Families may start dropping off at MAP at 8:30a.m. Upon entering MAP, the parent/guardian will sign in their child indicating the time at drop off, check their family mailbox, and help their child put their things away in a cubby. The children are then free to choose an activity within the room.

Indoor Free Play:  There is a wide variety of things to do in the MAP room - a quiet book area, recycle art, games, wooden blocks, cars, animals, dramatic play, and more. Things are always changing and the creativity of each child makes it different.

Snack: MAP provides snack as a choice during morning free play. Children have the option to clean up what they are playing with, wash their hands, and choose what they would like from the snack table. We serve water and always have a variety of healthy snacks, and fruit. If your child has any food allergies (or other allergy), please let us know!

9:30-10:00

Outside Free Play:  We try to go outside every day (weather permitting). Please be sure to dress your child accordingly, especially when the weather turns colder (we do go out in the snow). While outside, the children have use of balls, jump ropes, chalk, and other outside equipment. We sometimes play organized games or go to the playground.

10:00-11:10
Group: Group is a theme based time together for fun and learning. Teachers choose topics that are interesting and appealing to the children as well as follow the Massachusetts Preschool & Kindergarten learning frameworks. Teachers also enjoy sharing their special interests and talents with the children. We find that if we are excited about it, the children will be too!

Project: Following group, the project, activity or game begins. Sometimes everyone is asked to do the activity (we call this "mandatory fun"), other times it is a choice. The project or activity could be anything: drama, games, cooking, arts and crafts, building, science, etc.... Children are encouraged to follow directions but to be creative in making their own final product.

11:10-12:15
Lunch:  All children need to bring a lunch every day. We have a microwave for lunches that need to be reheated. Water is provided, or you can pack a drink in your child's lunch. The children are encouraged to eat the main part of their lunch first (sandwich, heat-up, etc.), then fruits and veggies, and finally their snacks or dessert. We ask that the children not share their lunches, and we try to send home what is left of the lunch so you are aware of how much they are eating. MAP also provides an opportunity for children to brush their teeth, with parental/guardian permission, whenever they are in our care for more than four hours or consume a meal.

End of the Day: After lunch the children have a quiet time and listen to stories, and have a little time to play with friends before going to school or being picked up.  Children attending Kindergarten or the Integrated Preschool will be walked over to school at the appropriate time.

If your child returns to MAP after Kindergarten, please read the section, First Grade & Kindergarten Afternoons at MAP.

11:05-12:15
Arrival & Attendance: The MAP educators will meet the children in the school at kindergarten dismissal at 11:05, and children coming from the Integrated Preschool at 11:15, take attendance, and walk the children over to MAP.

Popular clubs are often repeated, and we strive to make sure each child has the opportunity to join a club that they are interested in over the course of the year.
